Product Description
Brand new KitchenAid rubber blender coupler and removal tool.Fits models: KSB3 and KSB5Below are the instructions for repairing the coupler/clutch/coupling on the KitchenAid blenders:The blender's rubber coupling is designed to break if the blender is under strain. This will often happen if the food being chopped is too hard or being chopped at too higher speed. The part failing prevents the motor from more severe damage. The coupler/clutch has six rubber teeth which grip the underside of the blade in the blending jug. The clutch is secured to the blender spindle (which is made of steel) with a reverse aluminum thread. i.e. you turn clockwise to undo it which is the opposite to normal. There are two ways to remove the old clutch.

Fast and easy repair
By J.
I read several of the reviews of the coupler. After close observation of my own blender, I realized I would not be able to remove the torn coupler without a special tool, which I didn't know was available. Then I came upon this set of tool and coupler, which I immediately ordered, with my fingers crossed hoping it would work out. After a quick delivery (in my mailbox in 5 days, including a weekend), I opened the package. The directions that come with the coupler do not explain how to use special tool. However, it was pretty easy to figure out: Use the tool to hold the knob in place on which the coupler is attached (without the tool, the knob will turn in the same direction as the loosening direction). Use a plier to turn the coupler clockwise, while using the tool to hold the knob still, thus preventing the knob from turning as you loosen it. Note, the coupler must be loosened by turning it righty-loosey, opposite of the usual righty-tighty. For me, this could not be done without the pliers. But with the pliers, it came loose in 10 seconds. Once loosened, I unscrewed the old coupler and screwed on the new coupler. On a scale of 1-5 in difficulty, I would give this a 1.5.

Removal tool was absolutely necessary.
By D. Wilson
When my husband and I ordered the replacement rubber coupler for our Kitchenaid blender, I wanted to order the removal tool as well. He took the guy's advice in the other review and did not order it. After working on my blender for nearly half an hour attempting to remove the coupler according to the directions, he had a blister on his finger, had chisled little bits of metal off my blender base, was in a terrible mood, and he still couldn't remove it. I tried too, following the instructions closely, to no avail. We ordered the removal tool combo the next day and when it arrived, had the coupler off and replaced in less than a minute. The blender works perfectly once again. I wish I had ordered the removal tool in the first place.

Save your money! Instructions on how to remove w/o this tool!

The product works fine, the 1 star is for the price compared to what you need and the low-quality of the spanner (the wrench). You can buy the coupler here on amazon for $0.10 (and $4.99 shipping!) or 2 for . The price for 1 coupler and the wrench is $20 (including shipping), so you're being asked to pay $15 extra for the cheap wrench.
Also, as others have noted if you go to the supplier's web site, the cost for the wrench and one coupler is $13.90 (including shipping, as of 11/3/2012)
I removed the old coupler by prying with a screwdriver in about 60 seconds. I know, there's that review with the lady whose husband worked for 1/2 an hour, was in a terrible mood, and had blisters on his fingers. If you aren't a little bit handy, please buy the tool. IT is easy to use (but IMHO, no easier than the options below)
If you're still reading, good for you. Here's the trick:
UPDATE: The KitchenAid Blender Coupling 9704230(sans wrench),includes the "Instruction Sheet for KitchentAid Blender Drive Coupling Installation" that has picture and instructions amounting to item 1b. See link:
[...] or search for the document W10129076 & KitchenAid.
Start by unplugging the blender.
1a) If you have an ignition set, 9/32 inch will work (9/32 = 7.1 mm). Hold the shaft using the wrench on the flat and turn the coupler CLOCKWISE (it is left-handed thread). (Some ignition sets are too fat and won't fit in the narrow space). As other reviews have indicated, you might want to use pliers to turn the coupler.
1b) You can just PRY the old coupler off! It is made of aluminum and is attached to a stainless steel shaft. Since aluminum is so soft, it can be pried off w/o damage to the shaft. Stick a medium-sized (say 3/8") flat blade screwdriver under the old coupling, all the way to the shaft, and gently lift up on the screwdriver handle. You will see the coupler bend up a bit. Rotate the coupler about 1/4 turn and repeat. It took me 7 iterations (1 3/4 turns total) to remove the old coupler. Now, look at the threads of the shaft. You will see some aluminum shavings from the old coupler in there. Easy to remove, but be careful as those aluminum pieces may be sharp.
2) Screw on the new coupler (Counter-Clock wise - it is left-handed thread). Be careful about cross-threading because that steel shaft can cut new threads in the aluminum. When the blender runs, it will tighten the coupler on, so you don't have to worry about making it super-tight.
