Waited 2 years, recently bought this model 1782, excellent!

On several occasions I saw the VitaMix demo'd at Costco, but I didn't spring for it, primarily because of the price. But neighbors have one, and they've made nut butters for me, which you can't do with a regular blender. My old bar-style blender bit the dust, so I needed a replacement quickly. I checked Cuisinart and KitchenAid models here at Amazon, and I read quite a few reviews, especially the one-star and two-star comments. I wanted to know what people didn't like, or what quality issues might be worth noting. Obviously Cuisinart and KitchenAid sell thousands of blenders to thousands of happy people, but I didn't like reading about leaking jars, motor problems, and returns. I encourage you to do a little reading about these products, including the VitaMix, before you buy. I think there may be a decline in manufacturing quality on some of the well-known brands. Basically with VitaMix, if something goes wrong, which is unlikely, they take care of it without delay. So ...
I decided to go ahead and spring for a VitaMix, and I saw that this newer model was available. Yes, it's pricey, but you can apply for an Amazon Store Card, and on a purchase this expensive there is a six-month interest-free option, so that makes buying one manageable for lots of people, including me. That's exactly how I paid for it.
It's a very powerful machine, it has a new lid on the jar which is more snug fitting. Not as noisy as my last blender, which was a real banshee screamer. The only thing I might criticize is the recipe book that comes with the unit is focused on fruity, sweet drinks. Well, that's fine, we all love that stuff, but the machine can do much more than make frappucinos. You can puree roasted eggplant to add to chicken stock for soup, you can make superb pasta sauces, pestos, and savory dips. This is a tool for people who like to cook and make things with fresh ingredients. If your needs are very basic, like a morning smoothie, you may not need this much power. I did laugh when I unpacked my unit and saw that it has a 3-prong plug, and a fairly sturdy cord. This is not your average kitchen blender! If the pocketbook will allow it, and if you are something of a foodie, I think it's a good investment, it'll likely last forever and expand your horizons in the kitchen. It sure has delighted me.

Blender fantastic but container SUCKS
By Rosemarie
I've had this Vitamix for over 3 months - use it once or twice a day - love the smoothies it produces and the easy cleanup. BUT
The plastic container quickly changed from smooth and shiny to an ugly grey, scratched up interior. I have my Vitamix sitting on the bar right across my fridge for easy accessibility. Now I 'hide' the container beside the base, because it looks gross.
I remember seeing these Vitamixes in professional smoothie places and used to wonder 'don't they ever clean these containers?' now I know they did but there's nothing they can do about it - once that shiny newness is gone that's it. And did any of that rub off and go into my smoothies? I wonder..... Seems to me Vitamix could make a glass container and we wouldn't have that problem. But maybe there's a down side to glass I'm not aware of.
IMPORTANT UPDATE as of 8/27/2012
Thanks to all for your comments. I still use my Vitamix at least once a day and it is now time for me TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT as I have found THE perfect way to clean the container - not according to the Vitamix instructions which says to use 2 drops liquid dish detergent and warm water - but using the directions from this wonderful website which I found during a google search looking for a better way to clean the Vitamix - and folks it works....my container is now shiny and clean almost like it was brand new.
The secret ingredients are vinegar and baking soda mixed with warm/hot water. It's the fizzing action that does the trick!!!!
The simple directions are on the website. I only do mine about once a week and still get excellent results.

Daughter loves it
By Maine Reflections
Our 33-yo vegan daughter requested this for her only Christmas present, so a number of family members went in to get it for her, even though we were shocked at the price. The very first thing she did was grind some nuts to a powder which took just seconds, and made a couple of smoothies the first minute she got home. Then on New Year's Day she brought it back to our house again to make another smoothie and some Nutella from scratch (the regular stuff has dairy in it, she says). Taking into consideration all my feedback is secondhand, I would say she adores this machine. It is probably the first non-human thing she would save from a house fire, LOL! She says it is heavy-duty, fast, will do anything in seconds. My husband liked the 5-yr warranty too. Appears to be a phenomenal product!
